About Cable Lugs, Terminals & Glands

Lugs, terminals, connectors and glands make the joints in an electrical installation. Cable lugs (ring, fork or pin type, in copper or bimetal) are crimped onto cable ends so they can be bolted to breakers and busbars. Terminal blocks join and distribute wires inside panels, and cable glands hold the cable and seal the entry into an enclosure. This range also covers crimping tools, DIN-rail terminals and plug-in connectors.

A joint is only as good as its crimp, so the lug, the cable and the tool have to match.

How to choose

  • Conductor size: choose the lug for the cable cross-section in mm². The barrel size and the crimp die are marked for it.
  • Stud size: the hole in the lug must match the terminal bolt (for example M6, M8 or M10), and the connection must be tightened to the correct torque.
  • Material: tinned or plain copper lugs for copper cable. Use bimetal lugs to connect aluminium cable to copper busbars or terminals, to avoid corrosion between the two metals.
  • Insulated or not: insulated, colour-coded lugs and ferrules suit control wiring. Heavy non-insulated lugs are normally covered with a heat-shrink sleeve afterwards.
  • Glands: choose the thread (PG, metric or NPT) and a sealing range that includes the cable’s outside diameter, and use an armoured-type brass or stainless-steel gland where metal armour has to be clamped and bonded.

Cable Lugs, Terminals & Glands: frequently asked questions

Can I crimp a lug with ordinary pliers?

Small insulated terminals can be crimped with a ratchet tool made for them. Large lugs need a hydraulic crimper and the correct die for the lug size, because a joint squeezed with pliers can overheat.

Why use bimetal lugs?

Aluminium and copper in direct contact corrode and work loose. A bimetal lug has an aluminium barrel joined to a copper palm, so the joint between the two metals is made inside the lug.

What size cable gland do I need?

Measure the outside diameter of the cable and choose a gland whose sealing range includes it, then match the thread to the hole in the enclosure.
