About Capacitors & Power Factor Correction
Motors, transformers and lighting chokes draw reactive power, which lowers the power factor. Power factor correction (PFC) capacitors supply that reactive power close to the load, which reduces the current drawn from the supply and the penalty that industrial tariffs charge for a low power factor. This range covers power capacitors, automatic power factor controllers and the parts used in PFC panels.
Correction must match the load. Too much capacitance gives a leading power factor and can cause over-voltage.
How to choose
- kVAr rating: work out the reactive power needed from the load in kW and its present and target power factor, typically 0.95 or higher. Your electricity bill or an energy meter shows kW and kVA or kVAr.
- Fixed or automatic: fixed capacitors suit a single large motor, while an automatic panel with a controller and capacitor steps suits a load that varies.
- Harmonics: where drives or other non-linear loads are present, use detuned reactors or harmonic-rated capacitors to avoid resonance and capacitor failure.
- Voltage rating: choose a capacitor rated above the system voltage (for example 440 V or 525 V on a 400 V supply) and the right duty class.
- Switching and protection: use capacitor-duty contactors and correctly rated fuses, and make sure the capacitors can discharge before anyone works on the panel.
Capacitors & Power Factor Correction: frequently asked questions
What does power factor correction save?
It reduces the apparent current, which lowers cable and transformer loading and avoids low-power-factor penalties on industrial tariffs. It does not reduce the kilowatt-hours that the loads use.
Can I connect a capacitor directly across a motor?
Correcting an individual motor is common, but the capacitor must be sized below the motor’s no-load reactive power so that it cannot cause over-voltage when the supply is switched off while the motor is still spinning. Have the size checked by an engineer.
What is an APFC panel?
An automatic power factor correction panel switches capacitor steps in and out through contactors. A power factor controller measures the load and keeps the power factor close to the target as the load changes.
