About Pumps, Fans & Blowers

This range covers the pumps, fans and blowers used to move water, oil, gas and air in plants, buildings and machines: submersible and booster water pumps, mist and high-pressure pumps, centrifugal pumps, axial and exhaust fans, cooling fans for panels and equipment, and industrial blowers.

For a pump the two figures that decide the choice are flow and head. For a fan they are airflow and pressure.

How to choose

  • Flow and head (pumps): the flow in litres per minute or m³/h, and the total head, which is the lift plus the friction losses, in metres. Choose a pump whose curve passes through that duty point.
  • Supply and motor: single-phase 230 V or three-phase 400 V, DC 12 V or 24 V for small pumps and fans, and the motor power.
  • Liquid: clean water, sewage, oil or chemicals decide the pump type and its materials. A submersible pump must stay submerged and be rated for the depth.
  • Fans: the airflow in m³/h or CFM, the static pressure, the size (for example 80, 120, 172 or 200 mm for cooling fans) and the bearing type. Ball bearings last longer than sleeve bearings in hot places.
  • Protection and control: an IP rating for wet or dusty areas, dry-run or float protection for pumps, and a thermal overload or motor protection breaker for the motor.

Pumps, Fans & Blowers: frequently asked questions

What is pump head?

Head is the height a pump can raise water, plus the equivalent of the friction in pipes and fittings. Every pump has a curve that shows flow against head.

Can a submersible pump run dry?

Most cannot. The water cools and lubricates the pump, and running it dry can damage the motor and the seals. Use a float switch or a dry-run protector.

How do I size a cooling fan for a panel?

Work out the heat to be removed in watts and the temperature rise you can accept. As a rough guide, the airflow needed in m³/h is about 3.1 times the heat load in watts divided by the allowed temperature rise in °C. Fit an inlet filter and an exit so that the air actually flows through the panel.
