About Fasteners, Tapes & Hardware

This range covers the small consumables that every workshop and site uses: screws, bolts, nuts and washers, rivets, hose clamps, wall plugs and anchors, O-rings, insulation and PVC tapes, foil and sealing tapes, sealants and lubricants.

The right fastener or tape depends on the temperature, the surface and whether the joint must carry a load or only seal.

How to choose

  • Thread and size: metric (M6, M8, M10) or imperial threads, the length and the head type. The bolt and nut must share the same thread, and the washer must fit the bolt.
  • Material and finish: zinc-plated steel for dry indoor use, and stainless steel (A2 or A4) where moisture or corrosion is a concern.
  • Strength class: property class 8.8 or 10.9 for structural fixings. Plain screws are for light duty.
  • Tapes: PVC insulating tape for general wiring (check its voltage and temperature rating), self-amalgamating rubber tape for cable joints, aluminium foil tape for ducts, and polyimide (Kapton) tape for high temperature and electronics.
  • Sealants and anchors: silicone for weatherproofing and epoxy for bonding. Match the anchor to the wall: a plug for masonry, a concrete anchor, or a cavity fixing.

Fasteners, Tapes & Hardware: frequently asked questions

What does 8.8 mean on a bolt?

It is the property class. The first number times 100 gives the minimum tensile strength in MPa (800), and the second number shows the ratio of yield strength to tensile strength. 8.8 is the common high-strength grade, and 10.9 is stronger.

Which tape should I use for electrical insulation?

Use PVC electrical tape rated for the voltage and temperature of your cable. For joints that need extra protection from moisture, use self-amalgamating rubber tape under a layer of PVC tape.

Can I reuse a self-locking nut?

It is better not to, because the locking insert wears and grips less each time. Use a new nut where vibration or safety is a concern.
