About Welding Supplies
This range covers welding consumables and equipment for fabrication and repair: electrodes (rods) for arc welding, welding plants and CO₂ (MIG/MAG) welding machines, plasma cutting consumables and torch parts.
The electrode and the machine have to match the steel, the welding position and the supply that is available.
How to choose
- Electrode type: rutile types such as E6013 are easy to strike and suit general mild-steel work in all positions. Low-hydrogen types such as E7015, E7016 and E7018 give tougher welds for structural work and thick sections, and must be kept dry.
- Diameter and current: choose the electrode diameter for the plate thickness and set the current within the maker’s range. A 3.2 mm electrode typically runs at roughly 80–140 A.
- Duty cycle: choose a machine whose duty cycle at your working current suits the job. A 60% duty cycle at 200 A means 6 minutes of welding in every 10 minutes.
- Supply: check the machine’s input (single-phase 230 V or three-phase 400 V), the supply cable size and the breaker rating.
- Safety: a welding helmet with the correct shade, leather gloves, protective clothing and ventilation, with a fire blanket and extinguisher close by.
Welding Supplies: frequently asked questions
What does E6013 mean?
In the AWS system, E stands for electrode, 60 for a tensile strength of 60,000 psi, 1 for use in all positions, and the last two digits together for the coating and current type. It is a general-purpose mild-steel electrode.
Why must low-hydrogen electrodes be dried?
Their coating absorbs moisture, which puts hydrogen into the weld and can cause cracking. Store them in a heated oven or a sealed container and re-dry them as the maker instructs.
Should I buy an AC or a DC welder?
An AC welder is simpler and cheaper and runs most rutile electrodes. A DC machine gives a steadier arc and is needed for some electrodes. Check the current type on the electrode packaging.
