About Safety Equipment & PPE
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is the last line of defence between a worker and a hazard. This range covers safety helmets, safety shoes and boots, gloves, safety glasses and goggles, hearing protection, respirators and masks, high-visibility clothing, harnesses and lifelines, fire blankets and welding helmets.
PPE protects against a specific hazard only when it is the right type for that hazard and in good condition.
How to choose
- Hazard first: identify the risk (impact, cut, chemical, heat, electric shock, noise or dust) and choose equipment rated for it. A general-purpose glove does not protect against chemicals or heat.
- Standards: look for markings such as EN 397 for helmets, EN ISO 20345 for safety footwear, EN 388 for gloves against mechanical risks, EN 166 for eye protection and EN 352 for ear defenders.
- Electrical work: use insulating gloves (classes 00 to 4 under IEC 60903) and insulating footwear (EN 50321) rated for the voltage, and inspect them before each use.
- Fit and comfort: the wrong size is hazardous and tends to be left off, so check sizes and adjustments.
- Work at height: a harness needs a suitable anchor point, a lanyard or lifeline of the right length and a current inspection tag. A harness that has arrested a fall must be withdrawn from use.
Safety Equipment & PPE: frequently asked questions
Do safety shoes need steel toe caps?
A steel or composite toe cap protects against falling objects and crushing. Safety footwear with a toe cap tested to EN ISO 20345 is the usual requirement on industrial sites and in workshops.
How often should a safety helmet be replaced?
Follow the manufacturer’s date mark and service-life guidance, and replace any helmet that has taken an impact or shows cracks or fading.
Which gloves are suitable for welding?
Leather welding gloves tested to EN 12477 protect against heat and sparks. Ordinary fabric gloves are not suitable.
