About PLCs, HMIs & Programming Cables
A programmable logic controller (PLC) runs the control program of a machine: it reads inputs from sensors and switches, executes the logic and drives outputs such as contactors, valves and drives. An HMI (human-machine interface) is the operator’s touch screen or text display for viewing status and changing settings. This range covers compact PLCs, expansion and analogue modules, HMI panels, and the programming cables and communication converters used to load programs and connect devices.
A common reason a PLC job stalls is a missing programming cable or the wrong software version, so check the programming interface of the exact model before you order.
How to choose
- I/O count and type: count the digital inputs and outputs and the analogue inputs and outputs, and allow about 20% spare. Relay outputs suit mixed AC and DC loads, while transistor outputs switch faster but are DC only.
- Input polarity: check whether the inputs are sinking or sourcing so that they match your sensors and push buttons.
- Programming interface: each PLC family has its own programming software and cable (USB, RS-232, RS-485 or Ethernet). Confirm the cable, the software version and the licence before you buy.
- Communication: Modbus RTU or TCP, an industrial Ethernet protocol or CAN, to connect drives, meters and SCADA. Check that the HMI supports your PLC’s protocol.
- HMI: screen size and resolution, the PLC drivers it supports, and whether the configuration software for that HMI is available to you.
PLCs, HMIs & Programming Cables: frequently asked questions
What can a PLC do that a relay panel cannot?
A PLC runs its logic as a program, so changing how a machine works means editing the program instead of rewiring relays. It also brings timers, counters, analogue handling and communication together in one unit.
Can I program any PLC with a standard USB cable?
No. Many PLC families need a model-specific USB cable or adapter, because the programming port is RS-232, RS-485 or a proprietary interface. Match the cable to the PLC series and its port.
Do I need an HMI if I already have a PLC?
Not always. A PLC can run a machine without a screen, but an HMI lets operators start and stop, see alarms and change settings without a laptop. Small machines often use push buttons or a text display instead.
