About VFDs, Motor Drives & Speed Controllers
A variable frequency drive (VFD, also called an inverter or AC drive) controls the speed and torque of an AC induction motor by changing the frequency and voltage it receives. It also gives a soft start and can save energy on pumps and fans. This range also includes soft starters, servo and stepper drives, and simple speed controllers for small motors.
Drive selection starts with the motor nameplate, not with the kilowatt figure alone.
How to choose
- Motor current: size the drive on the motor’s full-load current from the nameplate, and make sure the drive’s rated output current is at least that. The kW rating is only a guide.
- Supply and output: single-phase 230 V or three-phase 400 V input. Many small drives accept single-phase input and give a 230 V three-phase output, so the motor must be wired for 230 V (delta).
- Load type: constant-torque loads such as conveyors, compressors and mixers need the full current rating, while variable-torque loads such as centrifugal pumps and fans can use a smaller drive. Read the normal-duty and heavy-duty ratings on the datasheet.
- Control and protection: start/stop and speed from the keypad, from terminals (0–10 V, 4–20 mA) or over a fieldbus; a braking option if the load must stop quickly; IP20 for mounting in a panel and a higher rating for wall mounting.
- Installation: use screened motor cable where the maker specifies it, keep the cable short, and leave clear space for cooling air. A drive in a hot panel needs derating.
VFDs, Motor Drives & Speed Controllers: frequently asked questions
Can a VFD run a single-phase motor?
Generally not. Standard drives are made for three-phase induction motors, and single-phase motors with start capacitors or centrifugal switches are not suitable. Use a drive that is rated for that motor type, or change the motor.
What is the difference between a soft starter and a VFD?
A soft starter ramps up the voltage to reduce starting current and mechanical shock, and then lets the motor run at full speed. A VFD also controls the speed continuously while the motor runs.
Why does my motor overheat at low speed on a drive?
A self-cooled motor gets less cooling air at low speed, so running at full torque for long periods can overheat it. Use a motor rated for inverter duty or add an external cooling fan.
