About Temperature Controllers & Thermostats
A temperature controller holds a process at a set temperature. It reads a sensor, compares the reading with the set point and switches a heater, cooler or valve to keep the difference small. This range covers digital PID controllers in standard panel sizes, simple on/off thermostats for heating, cooling and refrigeration, defrost and humidity controllers, and the controllers used on incubators, ovens, cold rooms and moulding machines.
Settle two things first: the sensor you will connect and the output the controller must drive. A controller has to be set up for its sensor type, and its output has to suit the heater or contactor.
How to choose
- Sensor input: thermocouple (types K and J are the most common), RTD (Pt100) or an NTC probe on small thermostats. Choose a controller whose input list includes your sensor and select the type in its menu; a wrong setting gives wrong readings or an error.
- Control mode: on/off control is enough for ovens, water tanks and cold rooms that can swing a little around the set point. PID control with auto-tuning holds the temperature much more tightly and suits moulds, extruders and process heating.
- Output: a relay output drives contactors and small heaters, an SSR-drive output drives a solid-state relay for fast, frequent switching, and a 4–20 mA output drives a power regulator. Relay contacts are rated for a few amps, so switch larger heaters through a contactor or SSR.
- Size and supply: the front size (for example 48 × 48, 72 × 72 or 96 × 96 mm), which sets the panel cut-out, and the supply voltage (100–240 V AC or 24 V DC/AC).
- Alarms and functions: alarm outputs, the temperature range of controller and sensor together, and for refrigeration a defrost cycle and compressor delay.
Temperature Controllers & Thermostats: frequently asked questions
What does PID mean?
PID stands for proportional, integral and derivative. The three terms adjust the heater power continuously so that the temperature reaches the set point quickly and stays there with little overshoot. Most digital controllers can tune themselves (auto-tune) on the real load.
Why does my controller show an error or a wrong reading?
The usual causes are a sensor type set wrongly in the menu, a thermocouple connected with reversed polarity, a broken or loose sensor wire, or an extension cable of the wrong type. Check the input setting first and then the wiring.
Can I connect a heater directly to the controller?
Only if the heater current is within the controller’s output rating, which for a relay output is often a few amps. For larger loads use the controller to drive a contactor or a solid-state relay.
