About Cutting Tools & CNC Accessories

This range covers the cutting tools used on lathes, milling machines, CNC routers, drills and grinders: drill bits, hole saws, end mills, engraving and router bits, collets and chucks, saw blades, diamond and abrasive cutting discs, grinding wheels and tapping tools.

The tool material decides how long a cutter lasts, so match it to the workpiece.

How to choose

  • Material: high-speed steel (HSS) for general drilling in steel and wood, cobalt steel for tougher steel and stainless steel, carbide for hard materials, PCB drilling and fast CNC work, and diamond for glass, ceramic and stone.
  • Size and shank: the diameter, flute length and shank size must match your collet or chuck, for example an ER11, ER20 or ER32 collet, or a 3.175 mm or 6 mm shank.
  • Flutes: two or three flutes clear the chips better in aluminium, wood and plastics, while four or more flutes give a finer finish in steel.
  • Speed and feed: follow the maker’s recommended cutting speed and feed for the material. Running a carbide tool too slowly or too fast breaks it.
  • Discs and wheels: match the disc diameter, bore and maximum RPM to your grinder, and never use a disc rated for a lower speed than the tool turns at.

Cutting Tools & CNC Accessories: frequently asked questions

Should I choose an HSS or a carbide drill bit?

HSS is tough and affordable for general drilling by hand. Carbide is harder and keeps its edge longer, but it is brittle, so it needs a rigid machine or CNC spindle.

What is an ER collet?

An ER collet is a spring sleeve that grips a tool shank in the spindle nut. The number (ER11, ER20, ER32) is the collet series, and each collet clamps only shanks within about 1 mm of its marked size.

How many flutes should an end mill have?

Two or three flutes for aluminium and plastics, where the chips need space, and four or more for steel and for finishing cuts.
