About Current Transformers

A current transformer (CT) steps a large primary current down to a small secondary current, usually 5 A or 1 A, so that meters, protection relays and power analysers can measure circuits of hundreds or thousands of amps safely. This range covers ring-type CTs and split-core CTs that open to fit around an existing cable.

One safety rule overrides everything else: never open the secondary circuit of a CT while the primary carries current.

How to choose

  • Ratio: the primary current over the secondary current, for example 200/5 A. Choose a primary rating equal to or just above the circuit’s maximum current, so that the meter works in its best range.
  • Accuracy class: class 0.5 or 1 for metering, and a protection class such as 5P10 for relays. Metering and protection CTs are not interchangeable.
  • Burden (VA): the CT must be able to drive the meter plus the wiring between them. A CT with too small a burden rating loses accuracy.
  • Size and type: the opening must fit your cable or busbar. Split-core types suit retrofit work where the cable cannot be disconnected.
  • Output: a 5 A or 1 A secondary for panel meters, or a milliamp or voltage output for some electronic meters. Check that the meter input matches.

Current Transformers: frequently asked questions

Why must a CT secondary never be left open?

With the primary live, an open secondary can develop a dangerously high voltage and damage the CT. Short the secondary terminals before disconnecting any meter.

How do I choose a CT ratio?

Pick a primary rating at or slightly above the maximum load current. For example, a 150 A load is usually measured with a 150/5 A or 200/5 A CT.

Can a current transformer measure DC?

No. A current transformer works only on alternating current. Direct current is measured with a shunt or a Hall-effect sensor.
