About Surge & Lightning Protection
Surge protective devices (SPDs) divert short, high-voltage spikes caused by lightning and switching away from sensitive equipment. This range covers AC and DC SPDs for distribution boards and solar systems, plug-in SPD cartridges, lightning arresters and earthing accessories.
An SPD only works as part of a system with a low-resistance earth, so plan the earthing at the same time.
How to choose
- Type (class): Type 1 at the building entrance where lightning current can enter, Type 2 at distribution boards and Type 3 close to sensitive equipment. Combined Type 1+2 devices are available (IEC 61643-11).
- Voltage rating (Uc): the maximum continuous operating voltage must be above the highest voltage in your system. On a 230/400 V supply 275 V and 385 V ratings are common. On a solar array choose a PV-rated SPD above the array’s cold open-circuit voltage.
- Discharge rating: Iimp (10/350 µs) for Type 1 and In or Imax (8/20 µs) for Type 2. A higher rating lasts longer where storms are frequent.
- Poles and system: single-phase (1+N), three-phase (3+N) or DC (2-pole or 3-pole), and the earthing system (TT, TN or IT), decide the connection mode.
- Back-up and earthing: fit the fuse or breaker the manufacturer specifies, keep the leads short and straight, and connect to a good earth.
Surge & Lightning Protection: frequently asked questions
Do I need a surge protector on a solar system?
It is strongly recommended. Long DC cable loops pick up induced surges from nearby lightning, and SPDs on the DC and AC sides protect the inverter. The DC side needs a device rated for PV use.
Is a lightning rod the same as an SPD?
No. A lightning rod (air terminal) intercepts a direct strike and leads it to earth, while an SPD in the distribution board limits the surge that still reaches the wiring. A building with a lightning protection system normally needs both.
How long does an SPD last?
Each surge uses up some of its capacity. Many SPDs have an indicator window or a remote contact that shows when the cartridge needs replacing, and they should be checked after storms.
