About Timers, Counters & Time Switches
Timers switch a circuit on or off after a set delay, counters count pulses or operations, and time switches switch a load at set times of the day or week. This range covers on-delay and multi-function timer relays, star-delta timers, electronic and mechanical counters, hour meters and programmable weekly time switches.
They look alike on the shelf, so the function and the supply voltage matter more than the size.
How to choose
- Function: on-delay, off-delay, interval, flasher, star-delta or multi-function. A multi-function timer can replace several single-function types.
- Time range: choose a range that puts your delay in the middle of the scale, for example 0–60 s or 0–10 min, for the best resolution.
- Supply and contacts: the supply voltage (for example 24 V DC, 110 V AC or 230 V AC) and the contact rating. Use a contactor to switch motors.
- Mounting: 8-pin or 11-pin plug-in with a socket, 35 mm DIN rail, or panel mounting in a 48 × 48 or 72 × 72 mm front size.
- Time switches: a daily or weekly programme, the number of on/off steps, and a back-up battery so that the clock keeps time through a power cut.
Timers, Counters & Time Switches: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between on-delay and off-delay?
An on-delay timer waits for the set time after it is energised before its contacts change. An off-delay timer’s contacts change as soon as it is energised or triggered and return after the set time once the supply or trigger is removed.
What is a star-delta timer?
It is the timer in a star-delta motor starter. It holds the motor in star connection for the starting period and then switches it to delta after a short changeover delay.
Can any counter count fast pulses?
Only if it is rated for the pulse frequency. Mechanical counters handle a few pulses per second, while electronic counters state their maximum frequency, from tens of hertz to several kilohertz, on the datasheet.
