About Heaters & Heating Elements

Industrial heating elements turn electricity into heat for moulds, tanks, ovens, pipes and water heating. This range covers cartridge heaters, band heaters, immersion and U-shaped heating elements, geyser elements, and room or process heaters.

Heater life depends on a good fit to the surface it heats and on a power density that suits the material.

How to choose

  • Power and voltage: the wattage and the supply (230 V single-phase or 400 V three-phase). Size the power from the heat to be delivered and the time allowed to heat up.
  • Dimensions: a cartridge heater must be a close fit in its bore, and a band heater must match the diameter and width of the barrel or nozzle.
  • Watt density: a loose-fitting heater overheats and fails. Choose a watt density that suits the material being heated, lower for liquids and plastics that degrade.
  • Sheath material: copper for clean water, stainless steel for general use, and Incoloy or titanium for corrosive liquids. Check the maximum temperature.
  • Control: pair the heater with a temperature controller, a thermocouple or Pt100 sensor and a contactor or SSR, and add an over-temperature cut-out where safety requires it.

Heaters & Heating Elements: frequently asked questions

Why do heating elements burn out early?

Common causes are a loose fit, scale or sludge on immersion elements, running dry, and a power density that is too high for the medium. Keep the element fully covered, descale it regularly and fit a temperature limiter.

What is the difference between a cartridge heater and a band heater?

A cartridge heater is a rod that is inserted into a drilled hole in a block or mould. A band heater clamps around the outside of a barrel, nozzle or pipe.

Can I connect a heater directly to a temperature controller?

Only if the controller’s output is rated for the heater current. For anything above a few amps use a contactor or solid-state relay driven by the controller.
